N2-N6: ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
ABOUT THIS PROGRAMME
The N2-N6 Electrical Engineering programme is a post-matric National Certificate programme.
Students who complete the National Certificate N4, can go on to complete N5 and N6 and thereafter 18 months in a relevant workplace to qualify for the National N Diploma: Electrical Engineering.
The N4 Certificate is offered at Westlake Campus Full-Time. The N5-N6 Certificates are offered via Distance Learning.

CAREER opportunities
It is recommended that students enrolling on the National Certificate programme complete the N5 and N6 as well as the 18-month workplace experiential training in order to qualify for the National N Diploma. Students can then enter either a University of Technology to complete a higher qualification or a workplace that requires the qualification.
Duration
The programme runs for a trimester 3-month period/10 weeks per certificate.
Note: N4 is offered Full-Time while N5-N6 are offered via Distance Learning Only.

Mathematics
Mathematical skills are expanded to the following learning areas:
- Factorisation
- Manipulation and word problems
- Determinants
- Complex numbers
- Trigonometry
- Sketch graphs
- Differentiation
- Integration
Logic Systems
In this subject the students will be introduced to the characteristics of a digital computer, structure of electronic digital computer and a brief history of the digital computer. Students will be equipped with the following subject knowledge: Analogue and Digital Representation; Number Systems and codes; Boolean Algebra and Logic Gates; and Multivibrators.
Electrotechnics
Following on from Electrotechnology, the students will be equipped with the following knowledge: Principles of Electricity; AC and DC Machines; AC Circuit Theory; Transformers; Generation and Supply of AC Power; Measuring Instruments; Switchgear; Solid State Control; Rectification and Electrical installations.
Industrial Electronics
Following from N3, Students will be equipped with the following subject knowledge: AC and DC Theory; Diodes; Power Supplies; Transistor and Amplifier Devices; Operational Amplifiers; Electronic Power Control; and Transducers and Testing equipment.
Engineering Science
Engineering Science can be defined as the application of mathematics, science, economics and practical knowledge to invent, innovate, design, maintain and research structures and machines. The syllabus makes provision to cover all these aspects. Students will be equipped with the following subject knowledge: Kinematics; Angular motion; Dynamics; Statics; Hydraulics; Stress, strain and Young’s modulus; and Heat.
