ABOUT THIS PROGRAMME
A Rigger is someone who uses hoists and pulleys, including lifting, moving and transporting, positioning, pulling and securing of heavy equipment, machines and oversized loads.
The Rigger operates a variety of mechanical lifting equipment and supervises the operations of lifting machines to perform lifting operations. ln addition, the Rigger provides access to the work area by means of erecting and dismantling scaffolding that is maintained for use throughout the working period.
A Rigger also assembles fall prevention systems as a safe method of access to their working area and performs climbing techniques safely. They work with a variety of fibre and steel wire ropes.
Minimum Admission requirements
Before registration at the College, it is a requirement that the Apprentice is linked to an employer.
A minimum of an NQF Level 1 or Grade 9 with Mathematics and Science is required, but preference is given to students who completed Grade 12.
CAREER opportunities
Riggers can be found in varying industries, everything from manufacturing and oil and gas to the movies. Riggers are also employed by industries such as mining, shipbuilding, construction, power and telecommunication, and hospitals, just to name a few. The load moving rigging industry can be broken down into three general categories: Load Movers, Trucking Companies, and Crane Companies.
Duration
This is a 3-year full-time programme. Students rotate between time spent at College and in the workplace.
