About this Programme

ABOUT THIS PROGRAMME

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Boat Builder and Repairer (Boat Builder).

Boat Builders build, maintain and/or repair boats and install and maintain marine systems (including amongst others marine electrical and electronic, propulsion and steering and marine plumbing systems) using a variety of materials (including amongst others glass fibre, wood and composites).

It also provides an opportunity for individuals to achieve a qualification that enable them to enter in a structured career and learning path, and to allow for the economic growth and development of the South African boatbuilding industry.

Entry Requirements:
• National Senior Certificate: Grade 12 with Mathematics
• National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF Level 4
• N3 Mechanical Engineering

The Boatbuilding curriculum is diverse, with career opportunities that are almost equally varied.

  • Work as a Boatbuilder on both luxury yachts (mostly fibreglass) or industrial application vessels (mostly fishing boats, barges, etc. mostly in aluminium)

This is a 3-year apprenticeship programme, which includes 6 months at the College and 6 months in industry.

    • Basic principles of composite construction,
    • Theories of surface preparation for boat painting.

    Year 2

    • Occupational health, safety and environment,
    • Principles of boat design,
    • Marine materials and corrosion,
    • Theories of composite construction and repair,
    • Principles of engine and drive systems,
    • Marine electrical installation,
    • Principles of boat painting.

    Year 3

    • Theories and principles of advanced composite construction
    • Marine electronics and power management,
    • Theories of marine systems,
    • Principles and techniques of boat design and construction to standard
