Cape Town, South Africa — False Bay TVET College has announced significant progress in the construction of its new Mitchells Plain Campus, a major infrastructure development set to expand access to vocational and occupational education in one of the city’s fastest-growing communities.
Following the official site handover in August 2024, construction milestones have been achieved on schedule. Work has progressed from site establishment and earthworks to foundation excavations, which began on 23 October 2024. Structural development is now well underway, with roofing and landscaping identified as the next phases of the project. The scale of the development is already visible to commuters along Spine Road in Bayview.
The new campus is expected to open in the final quarter of 2026, in time to support student applications for the 2027 academic year.

The Mitchells Plain Campus represents a long-term investment in both education and local economic development. Since the land transfer in February 2021, the College has prioritised community inclusion, achieving over 30% participation from local suppliers during construction.
Once complete, the campus will accommodate up to 3,000 students and offer programmes across five key faculties: Engineering, Business, Safety in Society, Design & IT, and Hair & Cosmetology. The institution is also working toward accreditation through the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations to introduce new qualifications in Cosmetology and Creative Design.
Students will benefit from modern classrooms, specialised workshops, and simulation environments designed to deliver practical, job-ready training. The programme offering will span traditional artisan trades such as bricklaying, carpentry, and plumbing, alongside future-focused disciplines including artificial intelligence software development, cloud administration, and cybersecurity.
Acting Principal Charlene Matthews emphasised the broader impact of the project:
“The Mitchells Plain Campus is more than just a new facility; it is a transformative investment in the future of the community. It expands access to quality education while ensuring our programmes remain aligned with industry needs. Our goal is to equip students with practical, in-demand skills so they can actively contribute to the economy.”
Campus Manager Souchan Gasant-Jackson added:
“Since 2005, we have worked to bring education closer to where our students live. This new campus builds on that vision. It reflects the unique spirit of Mitchells Plain — one of unity and resilience — and will continue to serve as a beacon of opportunity and hope.”
Designed with community integration in mind, the campus will include a multipurpose hall and auditorium available for local events, along with open, student-centred spaces. Infrastructure resilience has also been prioritised, ensuring continued operations during water or electricity disruptions.

Until the new campus is completed and fully accredited, the College will continue to operate from its temporary site at Cedar High School in Rocklands.
