On Tuesday, 08 April 2025, the Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (CFERI), located at False Bay TVET College’s Westlake Campus, hosted an enriching orientation session for students from the Mitchells Plain Campus. This dynamic event marked a significant milestone in nurturing a new wave of student entrepreneurs poised to drive change in their communities and beyond.
The session was expertly led by the Centre’s Programme Manager Thomas Mvumvu, who introduced the students to the Centre’s purpose, facilities, and the wide array of services available to both students and community-based entrepreneurs. Emphasis was placed on the Centre’s commitment to supporting students in transforming their ideas into sustainable business ventures by providing access to mentorship, resources, and entrepreneurial training.
In a warm welcome, students were introduced to the concept of entrepreneurship as a career path, not just an alternative to employment but as a primary means of creating opportunities for themselves and others. Students were also encouraged to view entrepreneurship through the lens of community impact starting with identifying needs and opportunities within their immediate surroundings. The day’s highlights included interactive training on Growth vs. Fixed Mindset facilitated by Mitchells Plain Campus lectures Ms. Shanaaz Gamieldien, and a practical Business Model Canvas (BMC) session delivered by Ms. Barry. Both sessions engaged the students deeply and set the tone for the entrepreneurial journey ahead. The learners responded with high levels of discipline and enthusiasm, showing eagerness to apply what they had learned.
The Programme Manager also introduced the importance of integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their entrepreneurial ventures, using these as a compass for responsible and impactful business development. Students were encouraged to generate ideas that align with global sustainability principles while addressing local needs.
A notable addition to the day was the participation of Ms. Kayla Isaacs from Kreative-inks.com, an entrepreneur from the Mitchells Plain community. Her presence demonstrated the Centre’s growing commitment to community outreach and the empowerment of women in business.
Campus Manager, Mrs. Souchan Gasant-Jackson, expressed pride in the success of the event, emphasising the importance of entrepreneurial development in unlocking opportunities for both students and the wider community. She proposed that this type of excursion become a permanent feature on the campus year planner, underscoring its lasting value.
This orientation laid a strong foundation for continued collaboration between the Centre and Mitchells Plain Campus. With programmes like these, False Bay TVET College continues to ignite entrepreneurial ambition and build resilient communities one student at a time.
