ABOUT THIS PROGRAMME

This Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme covers aspects of the development of children, how to layout and plan creative activities in order to develop children holistically and to plan and implement relevant activities.

Course Content

Course content

Fundamentals

  • Language, Literacy and Communication (LLC) Unit Standards, totalling 23 credits
  • Mathematical literacy, totalling 16 credits

Core

The Core consists of Life Orientation Unit Standards totalling 32 credits, which are all compulsory and includes topics like:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of sexuality and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS
  • Demonstrate an understanding of factors that contribute towards healthy living
  • Demonstrate knowledge of diversity within different relationships in the South African society
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to participate effectively in the workplace
  • Demonstrate knowledge of self in order to understand one’s identity and role within the immediate community and South African society
  • Plan and manage personal finances; Identify security, safety and environmental risks in the local environment
  • Plan to manage one’s time

Electives

The Elective component consists of an Academic Learning Area and Vocational Specialisations totalling 72 credits and includes topics like:

  • Maintain records and give reports about babies, toddlers and young children
  • Prepare an environment for babies, toddlers and young children
  • Care for babies, toddlers and young children
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of child development
  • Interact with babies, toddlers and young children
  • Engage in basic health promotion
  • Demonstrate an understanding of entrepreneurship and develop entrepreneurial qualities
  • Identify, analyse and select business opportunities
  • Write and present a simple business plan
