Making a difference through real Student Support

The Department of Higher Education (DHET) and Minister, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize hosted a two-day Conference, on the TVET College Student Support Services in East London.

 Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize and FBC Acting Principal Karin HendricksRepresentatives were from DHET, TVETCGC, SAFETSA, NSFAS & TVET College Management.  The Conference was themed “eliminating barriers to student success”. The focus was on building effective systems and support services to contribute to student improved performance.   Different commissions were represented namely Disability Support, Academic Support, Student Governance, Work Integrated Learning and Financial Aid.  Various issues were unpacked during these commissions through sharing of best practices and models as well as resolutions to on-going challenges.

A special address was made by Minister of Higher Education (DHET), Prof Hlengiwe Mkhize who acknowledged the colleges who had made significant inroads into Student Development Services.

False Bay TVET College received special acknowledgement for good performance in the categories of Disability Support and Student Leadership & Governance.

Ms Mandisa Njozela, Student Support and Development Services Manager at False Bay TVET College said “we have a holistic and comprehensive list of services available to our students. We also have qualified staff to dedicated portfolios and we are accessible and recommend realistic solutions to our student clients. While academics are our primary focus, the students’ overall wellbeing is paramount to their success.  I have listened to stories of students who have clawed their way out of the darkest places to overcome and succeed. Our students are beautiful and strong and I am proud to have played even a small part in their success.”

In closing, Minister Mkhize reiterated that everyone has a constitutional right to education. The provision of quality education depends on effective support services, to eliminate barriers to student success. She closed her address by thanking all in attendance for their good work and valuable contribution to the DHET’s ongoing vision of a South Africa in which we have a differentiated and fully-inclusive post-school system that allows South Africans to access relevant post-school education and training, in order to fulfil the economic and social goals of participation in an inclusive economy and society.
