Who is the target audience?

  1. Potential Students who are able to travel to False Bay College to write the internal and external exams.
  2. Potential Students who are unable to attend classes on a regular basis.
  3. Potential Students who feel they are able to study independently.
  4. Potential students who are working full time.
  5. Potential Students who are currently employed in the Business, Public or Financial Management or Electrical Engineering or Mechanical field and need to acquire a relevant qualification. 
  6. Potential Distance Learning Students must have access to a computer and the internet to access learning material.

What can I study?

To complete N4 – N6 = 4 semesters
*(3 subjects per semester)
It is recommended that students enrol for two (2) subjects to ensure successful completion, but are allowed to take up to three (3) subjects per semester if they academically strong.

 Entry requirement:

  • Grade 12 Certificate (compulsory)
  • Accounting (compulsory for Financial Management N4)
  • Preferably 20 years old or older
  • Currently employed in the related field (Business or Sales sector, etc.)
       AND/OR
  • 2 year’s work experience in the related field (Proof: Letter from current or previous employer)
  • Educare students must be able to complete 80 hours of practical in each level in an ECD centre
  • Hospitality and Catering students are required to do practical sessions at the Muizenberg Campus

Course Information

  1. Subjects in blue are compulsory.
  2. The candidate must obtain a year mark of 40% to be allowed to write the final exam.
  3. An internal and external exam is written during and at the end of each semester
  4. Students must complete 4 subjects to finish each certificate (i.e. N4).
  5. Students must pass a total of 12 subjects and complete 18 months of in-service training to be awarded theNational N Diploma. (N4, N5, N6).
  6. If students are employed in a related field it would count towards the in-service training component.
  7. Students must note that it is possible to log the in-service training component of 18 months concurrently with the theory studies but that the Diploma will only be issued after a minimum of three years from first registration.  The in-service component must comply with the requirements for the specific programme.  Students will be given advice on the authenticity of their in-service training.


ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING STUDIES N1 – N4 & MOTOR MECHANIC N1 – N3

1 Trimester = 10 weeks
To complete N1 – N3 = 4 Trimesters

Entry Requirements:

  • Grade 11 with Maths /Maths literacy (minimum 50% pass)
  • N3 or equivalent qualification for N4
  • Preferably 20 years old or older
  • Currently employed in a related field
    OR
  • Grade 9 Certificate
  • Maths /Maths literacy (minimum 50% pass)
  • Min 20 years of age
  • Currently employed in a related field for more than 2 years (Proof: Letter from employer)
  • For Electrical Engineering N4: N3, NC(V) Level 4 or Grade 12 (if candidate wants to proceed to University)

Course Information

  • Subjects in blue are compulsory.
  • An internal exam is written in week 8 of each trimester and an external exam is written at the end of each semester.
  • Students must complete 4 subjects to finish each certificate (i.e. N1).
  • Students must pass a total of 12 subjects to be awarded an N3 certificate (N1 – N3).
  • Students must pass a total of 8 subjects to be awarded an N2 certificate.
  • Students must do a practical of 18 months – 2 years to qualify to do a trade test.

How will the curriculum be delivered?

  • Learning material will be available on the college learning management system. Students can choose between e-book of hard copy textbooks.
  • An orientation session will take place at the beginning of each semester and trimester.
  • A lecturer will be appointed to assist with subject matter enquiries.
  • For Business, Public & Financial Management, an internal exam is written during the semester on Saturdays and after hours during the week from 16:00 – 18:00. The campus and venue will be announced. An external exam is written at the end of each semester at the Fish Hoek campus in Fish Hoek.
  • For Engineering Studies, a test is written in week 4 and 8 of each trimester and an external exam will be written at the Westlake campus of False Bay TVET College. Written tests will take place on Saturdays and after hours from 16:00 during the week.
  • You will need to be computer literate and have access to a computer and the internet to access online learning material on the college Learning Management System and from the Web.
  • You must have a valid e-mail address.
  • A semester or trimester mark will be generated from tests and assignments.
  • Exams are set nationally by the Department of Higher Education and Training
