False Bay College Spokesperson

27-year-old Brian Carolissen, was born, educated and matriculated in the small town of Montagu in the Cape. He registered at the Westlake Campus of False Bay College (FBC) in 2010 to study Welding.

Since then, Brian has taken advantage of every opportunity that the College hasto offer. As a result, he is about to make his second trip abroad as an ambassador for his College.

In 2011, Brian was selected to participate in an FBC student exchange programme in Sweden during December, learning about the Further Education and Training (FET) college system in that country, and also being exposed to Swedish culture and customs.

This year Brian was chosen, from FET College and university students nationwide, to be one of a group of students who will spend a year at community colleges in the United States of America (USA). The Community College Initiative Programme (CCIP) is a USA Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) educational exchange program that provides South African students, from FET colleges and universities of technology, the opportunity to undertake one year of study in their specific area of specialisation at a community college in the United States.  Since 2007, more than 120 South Africans have studied in the United States as part of this programme.

The selection process was rigorous, but Brian has excelled as a student and as a leader among his peers at Westlake. He was awarded first place among the Engineering and Related Designstudents in his National Certificate (Vocational) Level 3 and 4courses. In addition, he was elected as Vice President of the Westlake Student Representative Council (SRC) in 2012. He alsoservedas Treasurer of the Executive SRC Board.

Brian wasinitially interviewed for the American exchange programme at the FBC Head Office, then at the American Consulate, where he was required to write a language competency test.

Brian leaves for Chicago in July this year. He will spend a year at the College of DuPage, furthering his studies in welding, and completing an internship.

False Bay College – and especially its Westlake Campus – is very proud of Brian Carolissen. The College is looking forward to hearing Brian share his experiences when he returns from the USA next year.
